Correspondents: George Scharf (1-4) and William Bodham Donne (5). (1-2) largely deal with The winter's tale, with passing references to Hamlet and Merchant of Venice as well. (4), a fragment of a letter, concerns costumes for Iris, Ceres and Juno in The tempest and is illustrated with simple sketches of Juno on leaf 1v. Also mentions John Mitchell Kemble's death. (5) includes Donne's impressions of Kean's King Lear. Letters from Scharf written from 1 Torrington Square, National Portrait Gallery and the offices of the Exhibition of Art Treasures of the United Kingdom, Manchester; letter from Donne written from 9, the Grove, Blackheath. Some letters undated.

The English draftsman, illustrator and art historian George Scharf was the son of the homonymous German-born artist settled in London in 1816. In 1840 and 1843 he travelled as official artist with a government expedition to Asia Minor.
